Mankind has been fighting against his own since the beginning of time. Countless soldiers and civilians have died as anonymous pieces on the playing-board of history. The three battles depicted in this collection were either glorious victories or disastrous defeats for these cities but were written about in history books in terms of countries and commanders. Finally these stories are told here from the viewpoint of the ordinary people. Large-scale re-enactments, state-of-the-art computer animations and interviews with historians, archaeologists and medical experts bring the reality of these battles to life.

After their ship is sunk in the Atlantic by Germans, eight people are stranded in a lifeboat, among them a glamorous journalist, a tough seaman, a nurse and an injured sailor. He is neither an action movie hero, nor a conqueror. This simple boy, who was panic-stricken at the first sight of an enemy tank, overcomes his fear and manages to hit two enemy machines. However, battle scenes do not take much of the film's time. For his fighting exploits Alyosha is awarded a two-day's leave to visit his mother. He meets many different people on his way and is ready to help everybody. That leaves him just a few minutes to spend with his mother - a few words, a hug, and he is off for the front again... to never come back.
