This adaptation of Lev Slavin's play was notable for its humorous treatment of the Russian Civil War and foreign governments' involvement in it. The film was shot in 1968 but not completed until 1987 due to the intervention (no pun intended) of the authorities. It was intended to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the October revolution and at the same time be an entertaining film. One reviewer (for {~Variety}) likens the resulting film to what might have happened had directors Jean-Luc Godard and Federico Fellini teamed up with the Red Army in 1968 to put on a cabaret show.

Highly controversial and condemned by numerous religious organizations when first released, Baby Doll is an erotic and powerful study of lust, repression, hypocrisy and desire. Tennessee Williams' screenplay contains some wonderful innuendo-filled dialogue, as well as typical Williams imagery. What's surprising is that the picture is actually a black comedy, rather than the tragedy or melodrama one might expect. Elia Kazan directs with one eye on steamy sleaze and the other on the sheer foolishness of all involved, and gets some impressive performances out of his cast. Carroll Baker is surprisingly good, more than just an actress with looks. She's an off-putting, aggravating, teasing nymphet with something special beyond all of her alluring enticements. Karl Malden does well as her oafish, suffering husband, and Eli Wallach is especially good as the fly in his ointment.

Few films have gotten as much mileage out of Britain's caste system as The Servant, a black comedy charting the uneasy relationship between lazy young aristocrat Tony (James Fox) and his devious, reserved manservant Hugo (Dirk Bogarde). One of the first films scripted by playwright Harold Pinter, The Servant is as much about gesture and mannerism as about spoken innuendo, and director Joseph Losey keeps the movie thick with suggestion: Hugo's co-conspirator Vera (Sarah Miles) is a study in coy seduction, and the sounds, shadows, and furnishings around the young man's estate are downright suffocating. Though the locations are minimal, the director never lets the movie become too stagy; Bogarde's hilarious fight for a phone booth is the stuff of classic silent comedy. That Bogarde and Losey never specify Hugo's rationale for corrupting Tony only adds to The Servant's allure and its ambiguous, hallucinogenic ending.

All of the characters literally hook up and switch partners unknowingly. There's an aged hippie photographer (Franco Nero), the sweet virgin, a prostitute, an egotistical record producer and his humble wife, a married couple, a rock star and other assortment of Felliniesque characters."Post Coitum" is like an erotic slapstick version of "Magnolia", as filmed by Fellini.

This offbeat adaptation gives the viewer a postmodern taste of Shakespeare through the eyes of a deliberately obscure auteur. The film is set some time after Chernobyl has wiped everything out, and the world is trying to set itself right again. William Shakespeare Jr. the Fifth (Peter Sellars) is faced with the task of restoring his famed ancestor's lost works. He visits a resort in Switzerland and becomes fascinated with a visiting gangster, Don Learo (Burgess Meredith) and his lovely daughter, Cordelia (Molly Ringwald), who converse in actual Shakespearean lines. That's as close to the bard as this King Lear gets. It also includes appearances by Woody Allen, Norman Mailer, and director Godard himself as Professor Pluggy, a deranged individual who seems fascinated with Xeroxing his own hand.
